Zamalek sits on Gezira Island in the middle of the Nile. It is central, dense and full of early-twentieth-century apartment buildings, embassies, galleries and restaurants. If you want to live in Cairo rather than beside it, this is the address.

It is not modern. Buildings are old, lifts are old, and parking is genuinely difficult. What you get in return is location, character and the ability to walk to most of what you need.
